Construction won't stop music

Despite ongoing construction all around Soldiers and Sailors Park in downtown Warren, the popular "Music in the Park" series will return this summer.

"The grass in the park might not be as green as it has been in years past, but it will come back and we're going to have it," said Frankie Zavinski of the Warren Parks and Recreation Commission.

The park now is cluttered with retaining fences and barriers related to construction of the new Hickory Street Bridge, which is not expected to be completed until late July. The gazebo in the park has been blocked off until repairs can be made and work on Allegheny Point is expected to continue into early June.

But none of the construction should interfere with "Music in the Park," said Zavinski.

"They've assured us that everything will be cleaned up and we'll be ready to start the third weekend of June," said Zavinski. "We think we'll be all right. Things are looking good."

The "Music in the Park" series will continue until the second weekend in September.

Musical entertainment has been scheduled for every Friday night and three or four Saturdays.

The schedule for "Music in the Park" is being finalized and will be released within the next few weeks.

Zavinski said organizers again tried to schedule a variety of music. A polka band from Erie, several rock groups, country, the All-American Swing Band and gospel groups will be among those performing.

Construction in the area of the park and amphitheater should be completed by next year, said Zavinski, and "Music in the Park" organizers are hoping to expand the series.

"Next year, if we can get more funding, we might schedule groups for every Friday and Saturday," said Zavinski.
