Allegheny Point may or may not be the new home of the
Warren Senior Center.
The center's executive director said Tuesday that no
decisions have been made about
relocating the senior center.
Since plans for the new downtown housing/retail building
were announced more than two years ago, the Warren Senior
Center was mentioned as the probable tenant of the lower
level or "lawn level" of the building. The
lawn level will open onto Breeze Point Landing.
Margaret Sleeman, Warren Senior Center executive director,
had previously confirmed
that the senior center would probably be moving into
Allegheny Point. Construction of the
4 million building is nearing completion.
Sleeman did qualify her previous statement about the
move to Allegheny Point by saying senior center staff
was exploring whether any grants were available to help
pay for the new center.
But Sleeman said on Tuesday that Allegheny Point is
only among the options for relocating
"No actual decisions have been made at this point,"
she said. "We're looking at options. There are
a lot of different things, but the board has not decided."
The senior center's board of directors is waiting for
some answers related to potential
sites, said Sleeman, and the responses to those questions
will guide the decision.
As of Tuesday, said Sleeman, "Nothing has been
decided."
The senior center had planned to rent Allegheny Point
space for the new center rather than purchase the facility
from the owner, Susquehanna Valley Development Group.
The Warren Senior Center is currently located in a
converted residence in the 800 block of Pennsylvania
Ave. W.
The lawn level of Allegheny Point where the senior
center would be located is 11,000 square feet.
The street level of the 44,000-square-foot building
will offer retail and office space and
the upper floors will contain 20 one-bedroom and four
two-bedroom housing units, all with handicapped access,
for persons aged 62 and older.
