It will be a ball.
There have been almost 60 charity balls held by the Warren
General Hospital Auxiliary, but never one quite like the
one being planned for next year.
The Conewango Men's Club has been a venue for charity
balls of the past.
However, the fire-damaged club is now undergoing extensive
restoration work and is not expected to be available
in time to host next year's charity ball.
Several members of the auxiliary and Warren General
Hospital executive director John Papalia approached
Warren City Council on Monday with an alternative proposal,
which council enthusiastically supported.
The auxiliary wants to hold the 2003 charity ball
outdoors along the downtown riverfront at Breeze Point
Landing, capping the event with a fireworks display.
The ball has been tentatively scheduled for June 21.
Warren Mayor Mark Phillips said, "It's a great
idea to utilize Breeze Point Landing."
Councilman Jim Zavinski also said, "It's a wonderful
idea. I'm one hundred percent behind it."
Zavinski, who is also involved in scheduling of the
"Music in The Park" series at the nearby Soldiers
and Sailors Park, said no concerts will be scheduled
for the Saturday night of the charity ball to avoid
any conflicts.
Noting there is usually a theme for the charity ball,
councilman David See said a waterfront, riverboat or
nautical theme would seem to be a natural for the 2003
event.
Phillips said the plans do raise a few questions,
among them whether there will be alcoholic beverages
available and how access to the site will be controlled.
Papalia said the liquor license held by the Conewango
Club will be used for the event.
As for access, there will be a central point of access
and admission will be by ticket only.
A tent will probably be set up on the landing, said
Papalia, but nothing will be done such as driving stakes
that will result in any damage to the area.
The hospital will also apply for a fireworks permit,
Papalia said
